Line Lengths

Line length can play a major factor in the kites flying characteristics, whatever the manufacturer recommends (or supplies) is generally the best length for your kite. However there are times when you want longer or shorter lines. This takes a quick look at the advantages and disadvantages of both.

Pros of Longer Lines:

  • More time in the power window.
  • Allows the pilot to reach cleaner air above turbulence.
  • More time to react to movements or recover if something goes wrong.

Pros of Shorter Lines:

  • Quicker response.
  • Fast through the window.
  • Allows a bigger kite to be flown in stronger winds as the kite has less time in the power window, good for getting upwind.

Cons of Longer Lines:

  • Kite takes longer to manouver around the window.
  • Kite turns slower

Cons of Short Lines:

  • More suceptable to gusts as the kite flys in amoungst any turbulence.
  • Less time to recover if something goes wrong.
